Privacy Policy

i·CANTO (“i·CANTO,” “we,” “us”) is a language-learning app that helps you learn a language through song lyrics. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

1. Information we collect

Account information: your email address, and a securely hashed password if you sign up directly, or your email and basic profile info if you sign in with Google.
Learning activity: the songs you look up, chat messages you send, saved vocabulary, and conjugation history. This is core to how the app works and is tied to your account.
Usage analytics: with your permission, we use PostHog and Vercel Analytics to understand usage. We exclude chat text, lyrics, typed searches, email addresses, and sensitive URL parameters from these events. You can change this choice in Settings.
Technical data: standard server logs and cookies needed to keep you signed in securely.

2. How we use your information

To operate the app and provide the features you use.
To send account-security messages through Loops. Optional learning reminders and recaps require the separate Learning emails preference in Settings; you can turn it off or unsubscribe at any time.
To understand usage patterns and improve the product.

We do not sell your personal information.

3. Third-party services

To provide the app's features, we share limited data with:

OpenAI: powers translations, grammar explanations, quizzes, and chat.
ElevenLabs: generates pronunciation audio.
Spotify, LRCLIB, and Deezer: used to look up song lyrics and album art.
Google: if you sign in with Google.
PostHog: product analytics.
Loops: account-security emails and optional learning emails.
UserJot: optional Help & feedback, loaded when you open it. For accounts with a verified email, we share your account ID and verified email so we can recognize you and reply. Song-check requests include an editable song title and artist; you choose what to send. We do not attach lyrics, learning history, billing details, or private page URLs. Guests can write without creating an account; UserJot stores local conversation access and drafts in their browser.
Neon (Postgres) and Vercel: host our database and application.

Each of these providers has its own privacy practices governing the data they process on our behalf.

Public song discovery includes anonymous song activity from private chats and guest previews. Song invitations contain song metadata, not your chat messages. New named invitations also show your public name, handle, and profile photo; older anonymous links stay anonymous. You can revoke the invitation; previews already cached by messaging services may remain visible.

4. Data retention & deletion

We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. If you'd like your account and associated data deleted, email us at cody@icanto.tech and we'll take care of it.

Saved chat tool results may contain lyrics alongside your learning history. The shared song catalog keeps metadata and an unordered vocabulary inventory for recommendations. Guest previews cache up to ten songs on your device; entries expire after seven days and are cleared when you next use the app. Security and quota cookies remain separate from optional analytics.

When you choose to continue a friend’s invitation, we remember its link for up to seven days to carry that invitation through signup. If you create a new account, we keep its inviter with your account for referral reporting. A sign-in link can carry this context and your intended destination for its 20-minute lifetime. This does not follow anyone or send messages for you. Private profile content stays subject to your visibility settings. Optional sharing analytics still follows your analytics preference.

Pending email payloads are encrypted and cleared after delivery. Account deletion also includes personal song activity, invitations, connected sign-in identities, queued email data, and applicable analytics and email-provider records.

5. Children's privacy

i·CANTO is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We'll update the effective date above when we do.
